Elton John and Bernie Taupin's Historic Songwriting Piano.
There are few instruments that can come close to the musical significance and amazing songwriting history yielded from the keys of this piano. Direct from its current and rightful home in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, we are proud to present Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin's world famous songwriting piano. Used by the iconic songwriting duo to compose over a hundred songs, this white 1910-era A-Day Birdcage upright served as the primary vehicle that John and Taupin used to compose Elton's first five albums, including "Empty Sky"(1969), "Elton John" (1970), "Tumbleweed Connection" (1970), "Mad Man Across The Water" (1971) and "Friends: The Soundtrack" (1971). Possessing a resume that far exceeds the depth and involvement of most songwriting instruments of its caliber, a mere brief listing of songs that have been created on this very piano includes: "Your Song"(Elton's signature song), Border Song", "Burn Down The Mission", "Mad Man Across The Water", "Take It To The Pilot", "Lady Samantha", "Skyline Pidgeon", "Sixty Years On", "Friends", "Come Down In Time", "I've Been Loving You", "Rock N' Roll Madonna", "Bad Side of The Moon", "Levon" and the timeless classic "Tiny Dancer", just to name a few. In addition to its extensive songwriting credits, this piano also served as a prominent performance centerpiece that can be seen in the documentary, "Elton John and Bernie Taupin Two Rooms," played by John as he is composing and performing "Tiny Dancer". Additionally, John is also pictured with the piano on the back cover of the American version of "Empty Sky". Finally in the To Be Continued Box Set, released in 1990, in the story booklet when interviewed for this project, Bernie describes the upright piano as their "Brill Building"and mentions what was written on the piano as stated above. Typically, accomplished musicians will retain their pianos throughout their career due to the intimacy and involvement that th

The Byrds: Roger McGuinn's 1966 Rickenbacker Model 370-12 'BYRD' Guitar.
"In my opinion, the Byrds' sound would have been impossible without the invention of the Rickenbacker twelve string electric guitar." -- Roger McGuinn. This natural-finished Rickenbacker 370-12 was ordered new by Roger McGuinn with custom factory controls of his specification, commonly referred to among Rickenbacker collectors as the 'BYRD' model. This was the only Rickenbacker 12 string Roger McGuinn owned and used from June of 1966, when this instrument was completed, until early 1971. All of The Byrds' live appearances and recordings during this period bearing the signature Byrds' Rickenbacker sound and look feature this instrument. Live Events include: Monterey Pop Festival, Newport Pop Festivals (1968), Fillmore East, Fillmore West, Holland Pop Festival (featured in the concert film Stamping Ground), and all other live appearances into March, 1971. Television Appearances include: American Bandstand, Drop In, Playboy After Dark, Popside, Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, Top of The Pops, The Tonight Show, Where The Action Is, and others. Recording Appearances include: This guitar appeared on all sessions between July 28, 1966 and January 26, 1971 that feature Roger McGuinn on electric 12 string. Highlights include the singles So You Want To Be A Rock 'n' Roll Star, My Back Pages, and Chestnut Mare. LPs include Younger Than Yesterday, The Notorious Byrd Brothers, Sweetheart of the Rodeo, Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde, Ballad of Easy Rider, (Untitled), and Byrdmaniax. Roger owned the guitar another eight years following these documented uses, so it may appear on other recordings from early 1971 until 1979, although we have to date found no photographic evidence of its use after March of 1971. Roger added a mini switch to the instrument to turn on and off a Vox Treble Booster, the circuit of which he wired into the instrument. This mini switch can be seen between the two factory installed toggle switches. Roger removed the

Nirvana: Kurt Cobain's 1960's Mosrite Gospel Guitar.
This instrument is unusual in a couple of ways. It is the only known example of a Mark V style Mosrite Gospel model. While Kurt owned and smashed many cheap (usually Univox) copies of Mosrite guitars during his career, this was one of only two actual Mosrites he owned. (The other was damaged and given away.) It was also one of his favorite guitars, which saved it from the usual fate of the instruments he used for live performances. Kurt purchased the guitar in San Francisco in 1990. "According to Earnie [Bailey], 'Kurt had only one Gospel, and this is a beyond rare guitar. At the time Kurt died, I was secretly working with Loretta Mosley to build Kurt a lefty Gospel... in some cool color.' Unfortunately, Kurt passed away as Earnie was gathering photos to send to Mosrite of Kurt's original. 'Loretta sent me a nice letter after it ended, as she had recently lost Semie (husband, founder of Mosrite) and was now running Mosrite on her own... she had sent me some sales literature of another Gospel, but could find no history of ever having made one based on the Mark V guitar.'" (Quote reprinted from www.kurtsequipment.com.) Kurt had painted the very small Mosrite dot markers with white-out to make them more visible in a live setting. Although the current owner removed this simple modification, residue is still visible on the instrument. This is a factory right handed instrument, so it was modified for Kurt with a strap button added to the treble side horn, and the original metal string guide has been flipped to allow it to be strung left handed. The original case bears the words 'NIRVANA' and 'F... Elvis' [colorful expletive deleted here but preserved on the case - Ed.] in white paint which, while painted over with the same white paint, are still visible on inspection.
