Which Vintage Action Figures and Toys Are Worth the Most Money?

G.I. Joe

G.I. Joe was the first "action figure" and some variants can be extremely valuable -- especially those in original packaging from 1964 to 1994. This includes all international variations like Action Force / Action Man, Comandos em Acao, Plastirama, Estrela, Nilco, and Funskool. Pre-production and original package artwork are of great interest. Loose rare figures like Argen 7, European Tiger Force, and certain variations of Funskool figures are highly desirable.

Star Wars

Packaged figures, vehicles, and playsets released from 1977-1985. Prototypes, test shots, proof cards, and other rare items, especially the unreleased rocket-firing Boba Fett. Master Replicas of movie props and models. All international variations of the original line.

Captain Action & Super Queens

Original packaged figures and accessories from the 1960s.

Barbie

Primarily Barbie #1 from 1959. This figure has black and white hand-painted eyes and holes in the bottom of her feet. Other dolls from the '60s in the original boxes are also of interest as well.

Masters of the Universe

Original packaged figures, vehicles, and playsets from the 1980s, especially rare, boxed gift sets.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Packaged figures, vehicles, and playsets from 1988 to 1995.

WWF Wrestling Superstars

Sealed figures in original packaging from 1984-1989.

Kenner Super Powers

DC Super Heroes line of figures, vehicles, and playsets from the 1980s in the original packaging. International variants, especially Super Amigos el Acertijo (Riddler).

Mego World's Greatest Super Heroes

Sealed Super Hero figures, vehicles, and playsets from the 1970's.

Micronauts

Packaged and sealed figures, vehicles, and playsets from the classic line of interchangeable toys from the 1970s.

Remco Figures

Sealed action figures from their various lines including Warrior Beasts, Conan, and Pirates of the Galaxseas.

Japanese Tin Toys

Tin toys created for the Japanese market. Some loose, especially Batman-related and other known character vehicles and robots from the 1970's and before. Original packaging is highly preferred but does not need to be sealed.

Transformers

G1 and G2 vehicles and sets sealed in the original packaging including manufacturers Hasbro and Takara.

Power Rangers

Sealed in package figures, vehicles and playsets from the early 1990's.

Many other lines, too numerous to name.

If the toy is sealed in the package and from the 1960's to 1980's, but not listed above, please contact us to discuss.

Research What Makes a Vintage Toy Valuable

Have you ever wondered why one toy is worth more than another? Why similar items are worth $10 versus $10,000? Here are the four primary factors that determine the value of a toy in the market today. While there are other sub-factors, these are the primary drivers behind what collectors ultimately pay.

A. Popularity

Popular characters in popular toy lines sell better than secondary characters. Kids want them, adults want them, and collectors want them... they are must-haves. These are usually the first to sell off the shelves and ones that sell robustly on the secondary market. But this alone does not ultimately determine value as companies will often make more of the most popular characters and additional variations so they can sell them to as many people as they can. They are giving consumers what they desire and making money based on demand. To be valuable in the future, toys need to be popular, but that is just the first step.

B. Rarity

To hold value, a toy needs to be uncommon. If everyone already has them, who is going to buy them? For this reason, rarity is a critical component of toy value. The harder it is to get; the more people will pay. Some companies produce lower numbers of toys earlier on, creating a rarity and sending prices higher in the secondary market. Then they overproduce toys in later waves which means everyone can get as many as they want, decreasing the collectability and nullifying any secondary market value. Prime examples of this are Beanie Babies and the Star Wars figures from the 1990's.

C. Condition

The condition of a toy is particularly important to maintaining value. A toy sealed in the original package is worth more than one that has been played with. A toy in a package that is in mint condition and looks like it just came off the assembly line is worth far more than one with dents, bends, and scratches. Collectors often seek out the packaged toys in the absolute best condition possible and there are companies dedicated to grading and preserving toys (and many other collectible items). The higher the grade, the higher the price. Often, a toy worth $100 ungraded can be worth $1000 or more with a high grade.

D. Number of Collectors

All the above factors are important, but it is the number of collectors who are seeking the items and how much they are willing to compete with each other's wallets that determines the value of toys. If more collectors want something, the higher the price rises. If fewer collectors want something, the price lowers. It's basic supply and demand economics just like anything else.

So, the basic math looks like this: Popularity X Rarity X Condition X Collectors = Value

If you are interested in valuing your collection of vintage toys and action figures, do your research. Several online resources can help you determine the value of your toys. One such resource is the archive of Heritage Auctions' past sales. But remember that condition is critical, and many factors determine the sale price of similar items in differing conditions at different times.

A sales professional and account manager with more than 25 years of experience, Justin Caravoulias’ enduring love for action figures started in the ’70s with a fuzzy-haired GI Joe 12-inch Land Adventurer figure his mother bought at a yard sale. His position as a Consignment Director for Action Figures & Toys at Heritage perfectly unites his extensive sales background with his lifelong passion for action figures and toys.

After attending the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, Caravoulias started a successful career that encompassed advertising, telecommunications, premium domain name sales, and recruitment services. In 2019, he created e-commerce site Vitruvian Armory, a company that serves 1:18 scale action figure customizers by helping them acquire the parts and accessories to suit their individual needs. After joining Heritage in February 2023, he played an immediate key role in assembling the inaugural Ultimate Batman Collection Signature® Auction, personally cataloging over 600 lots with one of the largest and most comprehensive Batman collections from the ’60's and ’70s.

Caravoulias’ personal collection is diverse and based around action figures. Collected since childhood, his GI Joe collection ranges from 1964 to present day, in addition to other action figure lines from the ’70s to today along with trading/sports cards, vinyl records, VHS tapes, comic books, and most recently, Japanese movie tickets.
