Description

Maco Toys Commando Set No. 820 (Maco, 1950). Produced at the dawn of the 1950s, Maco's Commando Set No. 820 reflects the postwar toy industry's embrace of military-themed roleplay, combining scale, accessory count, and narrative packaging into a single boxed offering. Anchored by a Springfield '03-style bolt-action training rifle and an M1911-style .45 automatic pistol, the set is designed as a complete field kit, supplemented by a "U.S."-marked holster, adjustable garrison belt, and a flexible bayonet with sheath. The inclusion of projectile elements, with blue pellets and metal shells, underscores the mechanical play features typical of the period. A Maco-branded comic and accompanying instruction sheets further situate the set within the company's early marketing approach, where storytelling and play were closely intertwined. The unpunched die-cut display panel on the box preserves the original retail presentation, an increasingly uncommon survival point for sets of this type. Condition reflects light, age-appropriate wear. The box remains in excellent condition overall with only mild wear, retaining its unpunched die-cut front. The contents are likewise well-preserved and appear largely unused, with pellets and shells still sealed in their original baggies. The pistol shows separation along the seam as the original adhesive has begun to fail. The comic exhibits a tear at the upper left corner of the back cover, with the detached portion retained inside the box. The metal components on the belt and holster show light oxidation. A sharply preserved survivor from the early days of postwar play, this set carries the unmistakable imprint of backyard campaigns and long summer afternoons, when imagination filled in the rest and every field became a battlefield.
