The tournament's highlight was the unexpected success of the Argentine men's team, who defeated basketball powerhouses like the United States to secure the gold medal. unfortunately that year, Kobe Bryant did not participate in the Olympics.

Since Nike expected for team USA to win the Gold Medal that year, these were made to commemorate their victory. Kobe Bryant jersey numbered is embroidered on the back heel of the shoes. The lateral portion of the shoes feature gold stitching that resembles the columns that are found in Athens, Greece.
