The Fireballs Sugar Shack Danelectro Longhorn Guitar In early 1960 on The Fireballs first trip back east, Norman Petty scheduled them on Dick Clark's afternoon American Bandstand in Philadelphia, and then on to Dick Clark's Saturday Night Beechnut Show in New York City. During that time frame it was 'a must' for the group to visit the famous Manny's Music Store in NYC. Amazed at all the new & used musical equipment to see, Fireballs guitarist George Tomsco got his first glimpse of a strange looking 'Longhorn' Danelectro guitar. Back in Clovis, not far from Norman's recording studio on 7th street, was a popular 'hock shop' the Fireballs members visited every so often to see what was available since the last visit. In late 1962, George saw an identical 'used' Danelectro 6 string bass guitar hanging on the wall and asked if he could jam with it to see what it sounded like. Totally impressed with it's sound, which fit right in between the sound span of a regular guitar and an electric bass, he spent $200 and carted it back to the studio. As fate would have it, the group was working up some new songs for Jimmy Gilmer's recordings. When George tried it on several songs Norman said, "we absolutely need that 'THING' on THIS song - it's a must!" The rest is recording history. This Longhorn was used on tour and also later on more Fireballs intros. It is featured on "Carioca". This is THE Danelectro responsible for the "raspy, gutsy, bottom end sound" on the 1963 #1 Hit, Sugar Shack by Jimmy Gilmer & the Fireballs!
