Scotty Moore's 1983 Gibson Super 400CESN Guitar. Scotty Moore was Elvis Presley's guitar player from "That's All Right" in 1954, through 1968. His playing on Elvis', and possibly Rock and Roll's, greatest early records set the precedent for all to follow. Scotty picked up his first Super 400 from Gibson in 1956, and has been associated with them ever since. This guitar was purchased new in 1983 for Brian Setzer to use on the recordings for the Stray Cats LP Rant 'n Rave. Scotty Moore purchased this guitar in Nashville in 1987. When he returned to recording and performing live this was his main guitar. In 1992 he used it when he returned to Sun Studio in Memphis to record the 706 ReUnion: A Sentimental Journey album with Carl Perkins. In August of that year he performed live again for the first time since the 1968 Elvis Comeback Special. He played the guitar with Carl Perkins at Ellis Auditorium as part of the "Good Rockin' Tonight" show featuring the Sun Rhythm section, James Burton, D.J. Fontana, Ronnie McDowell and the Jordanaires, followed by a small tour in England. The guitar is in beautiful original condition. The only modification that Scotty made was to have a sound post installed to improve the sound and sustain for live performances. Gibson discontinued the Super 400CES as a standard production model in 1994. Relatively few of this top of the line model were produced, with the Natural finish being the more desirable and rarer variation. Current quotes for a new Super 400 from the Gibson Custom Shop approach the opening bid on this beautiful instrument. This auction lot includes the guitar's original Gibson hardshell case, and a letter of authenticity from Scotty Moore. Scotty Moore was among the first group of sidemen inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.
