Steely Dan: Walter Becker's 1963 German Dynelectron Longhorn Fretless Bass. Walter Becker picked up this bass "somewhere in Germany" while on tour with Steely Dan in the early 1970s. He purchased it as a curiosity, having never before seen one (neither had we). Walter kept the bass to play around his house. At first glance the bass appears to be a heavily modified Danelectro bass. It is in fact a solid wood instrument, unlike the Danelectro it is surely meant to copy. The pickups, while similar in shape to Dano "lipstick tubes", have one piece covers. It is a well made instrument, that plays well and sounds excellent. The current owner purchased the bass from the music store next door to his recording studio in Maui in late 1986 or 1987 after Walter had traded it in for other equipment. The bass has since been part of a studio collection, and has been used on various recordings for film director David Lynch. Included with this lot is the instrument's original Naugahyde-style gig bag.
