Steely Dan: Walter Becker's 1958 Fender Precision Bass. Walter Becker purchased this bass from a well known guitar collector/dealer in 1973. It was the finest example of a 1958 P-Bass in circulation at the time. This is a historically important instrument, in that Walter used this bass on Steely Dan recordings from the Pretzel Logic album onward. Walter has specifically mentioned this being the bass used on the song Rikki, Don't Lose That Number. That song beautifully showcases the great tone of this instrument. The current owner acquired the bass from Walter in 1991 in exchange for studio equipment. The bass had been kept for several years in a storage locker at Kahului Harbor in Maui, and the wood had swollen as a result of the high humidity. As a result the finish has cracked and flaked off of the bass, as seen in the photos. Renowned Maui luthier Stephen Grimes partially disassembled the bass and cleaned the oxidation from the metal parts. No parts have been changed on the bass. It has been kept in temperature and humidity controlled environments ever since. In recent years the bass has been part of a studio collection, and has been used on various records and recording projects for film director David Lynch, including a number of songs on Blue Bob, by John Neff and David Lynch, one of which was featured in the film Mulholland Drive. The bass is in excellent playing condition. Included is a black hardshell case.
