Rolling Stones Related - A Brian Knight Coppertone Guitar, circa 1970s Brian Knight first met Brian Jones in the early 60s at -- where else -- an R&B club. Jones was forming a band, which Knight soon joined as a guitarist and vocalist. The lineup was short-lived, however, as Knight wanted the group to stay firmly in the Blues of Muddy Waters, while Jones also wanted to add a more Chuck Berry-influenced rock sound. Knight created a new group with Charlie Watts called Blues By Six, and Jones supplanted Knight with the duo of Mick Jagger and Keith Richard, cementing the core of what would soon become the Rolling Stones. Knight continued to follow his own muse, and perfected a slide guitar technique which earned the respect of musicians like Ronnie Wood, Peter Green, and Eric Clapton, who recorded with him. Knight's trademark instruments, of his own creation, were acoustic guitars built with copper, which he felt produced a superior tone to all-wood instruments. Knight later gifted a personally inscribed Coppertone guitar to Clapton for his collection. Knight died in 2001, and although he never achieved the fame of many of his contemporaries, he is remembered as one of the finest-ever British guitarists.
This extremely rare Knight creation was in the possession of Knight's acquaintance and business partner, music industry executive and fellow musician Terry Slater. It was the prototype for a line of copper guitars to be mass-produced through their partnership, which unfortunately was never realized.
The guitar body is of copper and maple, bearing the logo 'Coppertone' on the head, and with 'Brian Knight/London' etched onto a copper pick guard on the front. The back and sides of copper with engraved floral decoration and mythological imagery.
