Wheel in the Sky/Patiently
1974 Guild F-50R Natural Acoustic Guitar, Serial
This is the guitar Neal Schon used to write "Wheel in the Sky" and "Patiently."
After three records with Journey, the group was told by their manager Walter "Herbie" Herbert they needed a lead vocalist that could work with keyboardist/vocalist Gregg Rolie. The man they originally picked was Robert Fleischman and they rehearsed new material, including "Wheel in the Sky." When Fleischman departed the group, Herbert told the band their new vocalist was a tenor that he had known for years: Steve Perry.
Despite the band's misgivings of Perry's voice and vocal style, Schon met up with Perry in a hotel room and they started to write material. Within a few minutes, Schon had the chords and Perry had most of the lyrics that became "Patiently", the first of many songs the pair would write together.
Prior to that Neal used this guitar to write and record "Wheel in the Sky" and "Winds of March". Neal wrote "Winds of March" with his father.
This guitar can be heard all over the Evolution album: Just the Same Way, Daydream, Majestic.
