Andy Warhol Meets The Velvet Underground: Rare Ticket to Café Bizarre in Greenwich Village (1965).One full admission ticket from the venue and era when Andy Warhol discovered Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground in New York City's Greenwich Village. The Café Bizarre was a hangout for the 50's beatnik culture, segueing into the avant-garde art scene of the mid-60's and a place where free spirits could hang out, create and be themselves. The ducat cleverly states, "Where the Beat Meet the Elite... Poets & Folk Swingers." One's imagination is the only limit from there, although the scene is very well-documented.
The ticket has no date and no mention of the Velvets, who played a residency there in December 1965. It strikes one as a promotional hand-out or giveaway, not quite a freebie because patrons still had to pay six bits to enter the club on West 3rd Street. But who could resist exploring "the most exciting and unusual entertainment in Greenwich Village & New York City"? (Offer not good on Saturdays, when they were probably already packed.)
As legend has it, filmmaker Barbara Rubin brought Andy Warhol and several others in to see the Velvets on a night they were playing. The two history-changing avant garde forces deeply meshed and subsequently toured the U.S. together throughout 1966, turning heads everywhere. Warhol would also manage and produce the VU in their earliest days.
It should be noted, however, that there is nothing to tie this ticket directly to the Velvets or Warhol, other than it was an entrance ticket to the cutting-edge scene that they were part of. So it could have been used on that fateful meeting night, or it could date from many months away. Once again, back to your imagination. One thing's for sure: we've never seen another one. Measures 1.8" x 5", in Near Mint Minus condition with minor wear to the right corners. COA from Heritage Auctions.
