    Description

The Rolling Stones 1973 Australian Tour Poster, Program and Ticket (AOR-4.261). A three-item lot from the Rolling Stones' 1973 tour of Australia, New Zealand and other Pacific Rim countries, consisting of the original tour poster, concert program and large ticket stub for one of the dates.

The poster features a beautiful design by Australian artist Ian McCausland, of a jet plane coming from the other side of the world and headed straight into the Stones "lips and tongue" logo, hovering over the Australian continent. The poster was once eighth-folded because it was included in the tour's souvenir program.

Speaking of which, the 16-page program has terrific images of the band throughout, none in full color but using lots of dazzling psychedelic colors like purple and orange. It also contains an interesting set of smaller "in-between" brown pages amongst the full-sized ones, a twist on the usual program format.

The ticket stub is large, fun and not torn at all, so was probably hole-punched as the spectators entered. It's from Auckland, New Zealand on Sunday, February 11, the only Kiwi date on the tour.

The poster measures 23 1/4" x 31 1/2" and grades to Very Good Plus condition; the program is 8 ¼" x 11 ¾" and grades to Very Good; and the ticket is 4 ½" x 5 ½" and also grades to Very Good. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: ERRATA: We have an update as to what was previously stated. Specimens of this poster without the folds do indeed exist because only a small number of them were folded down for inclusion in the tour program. And not all programs contained one; in Perth no folded poster was included, for example. Still, not a lot of copies are to be found of either the folded or unfolded version.

Background: Some fans and collectors consider this the most beautiful tour poster from the Rolling Stones' "golden era." The Stones began 1973 on a roll, having finished up their now infamous 1972 American tour in support of the landmark album Exile on Main St. as well as the recording to Exile's follow up, Goats Head Soup, in Jamaica. The band was set to begin their Pacific Tour, starting with a series of shows in Japan after a benefit concert in Los Angeles for the Nicaraguan earthquake victims and three concerts in Honolulu. However, due to Mick Jagger's previous drug conviction, they were ultimately denied entry to Japan. So their next step was a series of shows down under in both New Zealand and Australia. The Australian Immigration Ministry originally tried to ban the Stones from coming, but they eventually relented and allowed the band in.

Condition details: As discussed, the poster was machine-folded down for inclusion in the program. This one's in about as good a shape as they come, with no splitting at the seams, pinholes, fading or crinkling. There is a small amount of surface creasing, especially in the lower right, but as you can see it's negligible. Being such a short tour and with wording that ties the poster just to Australia, finding this item in any shape is a challenge, but finding one that was never hung in a fan's bedroom is a real treat.

The program is also susceptible to creasing and damage from handling due to its black color. This is a good solid example that has some bumped edges and an upper left corner with some of the black rubbed away. The back page also got turned under at some point, creating a wrinkly four-inch fold. There's also an unobtrusive vertical crease in the program.

The ticket has that hole punch, as we pointed out; not really damage, just part of the process. The ticket's verso still has original, yellowing cello tape right in the middle – you can pop it right off, if you like – and a little bit of writing.
