    Description

The Beatles Yesterday and Today Third State Peeled Mono "Butcher Cover" Album Plus Trunk Paste Over Slick (Capitol ST2553, 1966). Hard to believe this isn't a First State copy! The peeler was meticulous, careful not to damage the "Butcher Cover" lurking beneath. The peeling process is laborious and can result in a barely-presentable album cover. Not the case here; this is one of the nicest Mono examples we have seen. Plus you will receive the actual Trunk cover slick. Note: The added slick is almost always destroyed upon peeling.

The original cover for the Yesterday and Today album caused such a stir before hitting retail markets that virtually all copies were pulled before the public could make their purchase. To minimize their losses, Capitol Records decided to reuse many of the first edition Butcher covers. By pasting the new image over the existing jacket (known as a second state) by doing this they were able to quickly get the new LP to market.

The (in)famous "butcher" photo was taken early in 1966 by Robert Whitaker and actually had a title: "A Somnambulant Adventure." Whether or not it was a Vietnam protest or a protest against Capitol "butchering" their records is not officially known. When the new albums were shipped to retailers fans started peeling the trunk cover which would reveal the original image. This was then called a third state.

It has been estimated that mono was produced in a ten to one ratio over the stereo version. This copy was produced in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The factory number #3 is found on the back bottom right corner of the jacket. Approximately 60 to 80% of all Beatles records were manufactured at the East Coast pressing plant. Also includes original inner sleeve dust jacket and a copy of the recall letter. This is a one off opportunity to add this spectacular Mono example to the collection. Condition: Jacket NM-8/ Disc EX-7/ Trunk cover slick GD-3. LOA from Beatles Authority Gary M. Hein of Hein's Rare Collectibles and COA from Heritage Auctions. LOA from Gary Hein
