The Beatles Yesterday and Today 3rd State Mono Butcher Cover Capitol T 2553 (1966). Released by Capitol Records, June 20, 1966. The title was based on the inclusion of the hit song "Yesterday." As always with Capitol, the album was a mish-mash of songs and has no British counterpart at all. The famous "butcher" photo was taken early in 1966 by Robert Whitaker and actually had a title: A Somnambulant Adventure. Whether or not it was a Vietnam protest or a protest against Capitol "butchering" their records, the fact is that it became the official album cover and when first seen by DJs and record stores, there was an immediate and negative reaction to its graphic nature.

So, Capitol hurriedly selected an alternate cover (the "Trunk" cover), and withdrew the Butcher Cover. At that point Capitol supposedly had losses of $250,000 before the album was ever officially released to the public. To save money they used as many of the original jackets as they could by covering the butcher image with the new Trunk image. That's what happened here, but the outer cover has been cleverly and professionally removed to reveal the original Butcher Cover image.

This is the mono version. Around 85% were mono and 15% were stereo. This example came from the Scranton, PA pressing plant. The LP color advertisement inner sleeve is golden/bright orange in color, featuring the phrase "Capitol '66: Sounds Great!" which was predominantly used between late spring and winter 1966.

Also included is a copy of the recall letter from Ron Tepper, Manager Press & Information Services for Capitol Records. Condition: The peeled cover looks great with a left top corner bump. The peeled cover has had some restoration performed and looks great with only minor wear. Overall cover condition EX-7.5. The inner sleeve has a small tear on the top-left corner. Front cover has some wear to the opening/edge. The disc has two minor vinyl defects that does not effect play. Overall disc condition EX-7. One of the most displayable pieces in the hobby. Add this rare piece of Beatles history to the collection. LOA from Beatles Authority Gary M. Hein of Hein's Rare Collectibles and COA from Heritage Auctions.
