DOUBLE TROUBLE, ALL RIGHT: BOTH STEVIE & JIMMIE PLAYING

Stevie Ray Vaughan 1973 Austin, TX Afternoon Kegger Concert Poster. A startlingly early, rare and cool Stevie Ray Vaughan concert poster from when he was still a teenager and playing with his older brother Jimmie around Austin, Texas. Jimmie would go on to stardom with the Fabulous Thunderbirds and beyond, of course, and Stevie would go on to immortality.

This window card advertised a Sunday afternoon jam at the South Door Saloon on February 25, 1973 starting at 2:00 PM. "No Cover" and "Free Keg" should have brought half of Austin to the club's doorstep. Mama's Cookin', surely another local band, was the opening act.

It's believed that only 100 silkscreened prints were made for each of Austin artist Robert Burns' popular early SRV posters, and they seldom come up for sale half-a-century later. Rock-music collecting had not gained much traction yet in 1973 - Goldmine magazine was still a year off - so the posters were seemingly only saved for their artwork appeal, by those in Austin and surrounds.

This poster's interesting graphics consist of two pink centaurs playing pan flutes while sitting, symmetrically, on tree stumps. Legendary artist Robert A. Burns - whose last-name signature is printed as part of the artwork in the lower right - was schooled at the University of Texas. He went on to become an art director and production designer in the movie business. His work is well-known in the horror genre, including motion pictures such as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Re-Animator and The Howling. (Burns passed away in 2004.)

Just like last time with our SRV Blackbird poster, this is the very first time Heritage has been able to offer this rare, early gem. You just never see these come up for sale, anywhere.

Measures a shade over 14" x 22" and grades to Near Mint condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Board is in beautiful condition, with one having to search for any flaws. Has only slightly touched corners a small mark to the upper left of "Free Keg," the lightest possible brown watermarks under "Tinnin" on the bottom edge, and the ever-so-slightest dings on the right edge over from "Jam" and lower left edge under "1523." Also a few lightest imaginable surface scuff marks in the brown coloring to the left and right of "The South Door." This is picayune stuff, revealed only for full disclosure and carrying so little weight that it's easy for us to call this beauty Near Mint.
