Duke Ellington "You're the Top" Handwritten Score. Duke Ellington wrote and arranged his songs with the unique talents of his band members in mind rather than for an anonymous horn section. He also rearranged his "charts" to keep them fresh sounding, so that performances sounded different in the '30s than they did in the '50s or '70s. This handwritten chart for "You're the Top" makes note of passages for famed saxophonist Johnny "Rabbit" Hodges, and trombonists Lawrence Brown and "Tricky Sam" Nanton. Most of Duke Ellington's scores are housed in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., making this one of the last to be offered to the public.
