    Description

The Beatles ("The White Album") John Lennon Signed and Low-Numbered "A0000011" LP Cover (Apple SWBO 101, 1968). Released November 22, 1968, the Beatles' ninth studio album was a critical and commercial success, and though it wasn't released to perfect reviews, has long since been considered one of the greatest, and most important Rock albums ever to be released. Mostly written in March and April, 1968 during a trip to Rishikesh, India where the Fab Four were taking a course in Transcendental Meditation, "The White Album" was recorded in May of that year at EMI Studios (renamed Abbey Road Studios in 1970).

Here is a copy of the gatefold sleeve of that timeless record, absolutely astounding for two reasons: first, it's autographed "To Yvonne / Love From / John Lennon" by the late Beatle (writer of the album's "Dear Prudence," "Revolution 1," among many others) in black fountain ink; second, this is an incredibly rare "low-numbered" early presses of the album. It's stamped "A0000011" on the lower-right corner of the cover.

According to noted Beatles historian Bruce Spizer: "Although some mysteries surrounding the numbering of 'The White Album' covers remain, there are certain things well established. As one would expect, low numbered covers are worth a hefty premium. An early batch of albums, specifically those numbered 'A0000001' to 'A0000025' was sent to Capitol Records president Stan Gortikov in mid-November, 1968. Gortikov sent this box to George Harrison at Apple's Saville Row headquarters. He told George that he was sending 'those copies of the new U.S. Beatles album...as personal souvenirs for you and selected friends. I have personally stolen number A0000005, because I am a friend too. Besides, I love the music.' Gortikov left the first four numbers for the Beatles, but pulled the next lowest number for himself!" Heritage Auctions believes that this LP, numbered "A0000011" is from that historically significant batch of 24 albums sent to Harrison from Capitol Records president Stan Gortikov.

This lot is an utter treasure for any Beatles collector. The cover for this LP has had some heavy restoration on the front, back, and and inside the gatefold, and there is some chipping to the spine. As well, the signature shows some smearing, likely from being closed when the ink was still wet. Condition: VG 5 (sleeve - note wear and restoration stated above). COA from Heritage Auctions.
