Robert Johnson "Love In Vain Blues / Preachin' Blues" 78 RPM (Vocalion-04630, 1937). Blues collectors generally agree that Robert Johnson's "Love in Vain" and "Preaching Blues" is Robert Johnson's rarest issue of Vocalion 04630 and was his only posthumously issued 78. "Love In Vain," Johnson's most poignant blues, became a hit for the Rolling Stones on their 1969 Let it Bleed album. Eric Clapton featured "Love In Vain" in many of his live shows for many years and recorded a version in 2004 for his album Me & Mr Johnson. "Preachin' Blues (Up Jumped the Devil)" is a guitarist's tour de force with some of the most vivid, mystical lyrics (..."saw the blues walkin' like a man..well, the blues give me your right hand..."). This issue was Robert Johnson's last. Shortly before its issue, the noted music critic John Hammond (who launched the careers of Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, and Bruce Springsteen), wanted to bring Johnson to New York for a concert featuring blues and jazz artists called "Spirituals to Swing" only to find out he had died, allegedly poisoned by a jealous lover in 1938 at the age of 27. This copy, probably one of about fifteen known, has had some play, but sounds loud and strong. Condition of vinyl GD-VG 4, label condition EX 7 and Vocalion company sleeve in VG-EX 6 with some minor tears around label opening and some at the top of insert.Auction Info
