Junior McCants Rare Northern Soul Promo 45 "Try Me For Your New Love" (King 6106 white label promo, 1967). "Rare" is assumed when discussing Northern Soul records. By the term's very definition, a Northern Soul record must be an uncommon recording - at least the original pressings thereof. The phenomenon of Northern Soul was born out of the appreciation of records which had had little commercial success, recordings that, while based on the beats and sounds produced by 60's Tamla and Motown hits, were not hits. The rarest 45 of the genre is generally considered to be Frank Wilson's "Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)", for which Jerry Osborne in his Rockin' Records Price Guide lists a value range of $30,000 to $40,000.
But if "Do I Love You" is considered the rarest, Junior McCants' "Try Me For Your New Love" is in the discussion! Until our offering became available, it wasn't widely known whether more than one promo copy was in existence after a copy sold online for an impressive $15,000 in 2008. McCants had released another King single earlier in 1967, "The Boy Needs A Girl"/ "Help My Love", which got some regional airplay, but did not chart nationally. Copies of this uncommon single are valued at $50 to $75 by Rockin' Records. Later in 1967, about the time "Try Me For Your New Love" was to be released, McCants died tragically from a brain tumor or a motorcycle accident, depending on the source you review. The story is that out of respect for the family, the record was never released commercially and the few promotional copies already produced were destroyed, except for very few copies - perhaps only two.
Comparing the condition of our offering to the one that sold in 2009, the label here is much cleaner. It plays about VG-EX 6; the other copy was advertised as VG+. The flipside "She Wrote It - I Read It" also plays about VG-EX 6 except for a slight skip at the very beginning, which may be due to a manufacturing defect.
If you want a feel for the attraction of Northern Soul, just listen to either of these singles, clips of which can be found online. Either could be the best Soul song you've never heard! It just doesn't get much rarer than this.
