    Description

Gene Rockwell "Die Jare Gaan Verby" ("Those Were the Days" sung in Afrikaans) / "Rose Is Rooi" South African 45, a Rare Apple Label Record (Apple PD 9431, 1968). One of the truly unique and rare releases on the Apple label. Gene Rockwell was a top South African pop singer and this is an Afrikaans language version of the Mary Hopkins hit "Those Were the Days"; the title literally translates to "The Years go Passing". Based on the catalog number and the "Single 45 Play" notation on the label, this was not a South Africa EMI release, but rather one from the Gallo label (associated with Decca / London). A very limited release, seldom offered. Listed in Jeffery Levy's book, AppleLog (5th Edition), entry #403, and noted as "extremely rare and hard to find." VG 5 condition with writing on both labels and a pink stain on the B side label.

The story explaining this rare Apple release is told by close Beatles associate Tony Bramwell: "There is an interesting story connected with Gallo, which was a small family-run company. Years later, when the boys formed Apple Records they didn't always distribute through EMI around the world but did a country-by-country deal. At the time, there were embargoes on trading with South Africa due to their apartheid laws, but, believing that music crossed class, color and creed and that there were no barriers in the music world, illegal as it was, Ron Kass flew out and did a deal with Peter Gallo to distribute Apple records. Uniquely-something that happened nowhere else in the world- Gallo was allowed to put their own local bands-in Swahili or whatever-on the Apple label. These South African Apple records are as rare as hen's teeth and very few collectors even know of their existence." From Tony Bramwell's 2006 book by Macmillan, Magical Mystery Tours: My Life with the Beatles (page 24).

If the name "Gallo" rings a bell with you serious Beatle historians, it may be because the guitar John Lennon was playing the day he met Paul McCartney in 1957 was purchased by him mail order from the same Gallo company in South Africa when he was fourteen (for £10). This original John Lennon-owned Gallotone Champion guitar sold at auction in 1999 for $251,000!

The movie quite literally changed my life. I have included a pic of me in Sly's Rocky 3 Cashmere overcoat, would much appreciate if it is possible for you to forward this email to Sly to let him know the overcoat is in good hands, and will be well taken care of, (as will be the Rambo knife forging tools, the other lot I won!) Wish you very happy holidays and a great 2016!
