Blind Willie McTell "Three Women Blues / Statesboro Blues" 78 RPM (Victor V-38001, 1928). Blind Willie McTell was a master at cajoling recording sessions and had a long, if spotty, career at it, despite the fact that none of his records was ever a commercial success. McTell was a fixture in Atlanta for many years, entertaining customers at a drive-up restaurant called the Pig & Whistle and playing tent shows and revival meetings around North Georgia. He was born around Statesboro, Georgia, and the intensity of which he sings of his home town makes this his most sought after recording, most famously revived by the Allman Brothers in the 1970s. The Youngbloods, Chris Smither, and Tom Rush also picked up on this McTell classic. The flip side, "Three Women Blues" features the haunting bottleneck guitar that captivated Jack White of White Stripes who recorded his own version of it. This is one of Mc Tell's scarcest sides on Victor 38001, in the original jacket that Victor used for its blues issues in 1928. This copy, which came from one of the world's premier blues collections, was the best copy this collector could find in some forty years of searching. It has seen some play but the sound remains clear and strong. Condition of disc VG 5 and label EX 7. The Victor sleeve VG-EX 6.
