Beatles/The Beat Brothers "My Bonnie / Why" 78 RPM One-Side Acetate from Germany (1961). Maybe one of the rarest Beat Brothers records to come to auction. The Beatles and Tony Sheridan went into Deutsche Grammonphon Hamburg Studios on June 22,1961 to do their first recording as Tony Sheridan and the Beat Brothers. This quote from the Beatle Bible: "On this day they were recorded, not at a professional studio, but at a converted stage at Hamburg's Friedrich-Ebert-Halle". The venue served as a function hall for the town of Hamburg, and as an assembly hall for the local grammar and high schools. A number of musical performances took place there, including some skiffle and jazz shows, but rock 'n' roll was a rarity. The good acoustics, however, meant that it was often used by Polydor and Philips for recordings."This would be the first time for the Beatles to record in a studio. This session was produced by the famous Bert Kaempfert and then engineered by Karl Hinze. This one-side acetate plays "My Bonnie" with the German intro and "Why" (which may be a slightly different mix to the released version). This acetate is pressed with the date "July 1961" in the run-off grove (7 - 1961). The label and paper sleeve is believed to be in Karl Hinze's handwriting. However, what has to be the most unusual thing about this piece is that it is recorded at 78 RPM. This was never released as a 78, but was it planned and just never happened? Here, we have a major mystery. Condition on the recorded side is in EX 7. The label area is is as as seen in the images. The unrecorded side does have some wear as seen in our images. The original sleeve does have some wear and tear evident as well. What a great piece of Beatles recording history!
