Woodstock 1969 Large Bus Sign w/Grateful Dead, Hendrix, Janis, Who, The Band, CSNY, Santana, Jeff Beck, Etc....
Description
THREE DAYS OF PEACE, LOVE & MUSIC THAT'S NEVER BEEN EQUALED
Woodstock 1969 Large Bus Sign w/Grateful Dead, Hendrix, Janis,
Who, The Band, CSNY, Santana, Jeff Beck, Etc. An oversized,
thick cardboard advertising poster for Woodstock that was adorned
to the side of New York City busses to help spread the word in the
summer of 1969 about the upcoming Aquarian Exposition.Any time you can find a large, colorful cardboard concert poster from the 1960's with the names Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead and The Who on it, you know you're on to something special. Throw in the Jefferson Airplane, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Santana, The Band and everyone else, and it obviously becomes unique. Relatively few of these bus signs have ever surfaced, making it infinitely scarcer than the smaller (but wildly popular) vertical red paper posters.
Additional musicians listed on the poster were Arlo Guthrie, Tim Hardin, Richie Havens, the Incredible String Band, Ravi Shankar, Bert Sommer, Sweetwater, Canned Heat, Keef Hartley, Mountain, Quill, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Ten Years After and Johnny Winter, and two artists that were scheduled but did not play: the Jeff Beck Group and Iron Butterfly.
For many, this item's grand size is a perfect match for the legend that is Woodstock. Its message could be seen across the street, and luckily it lists all the musicians that the paper versions do, but without all the arts & crafts details. It features the same Arnold Skolnick artwork, just reconfigured to a horizontal format. Framed up, this masterpiece of 1960's concert-poster ephemera would command any room or office in the house and be a constant source of conversation by anyone who encountered it, young or old. Measures 43 ¾" x 21" and grades to Near Mint Minus condition. From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: Poster has a light bit of surface wear causing small light-white marks throughout the red, most noticeable on the black lettering of Sweetwater and Santana. The lower right corner has a 1" surface in the white area only, totally harmless stuff. The board's lower left edge near the corner suffered an edge ding, just on the very edge and nowhere near the red, which Chameleon Restoration vanquished to the point where you'd never know it was ever there. General toning throughout.
