U2 1981 Los Angeles Concert Poster on the Boy Tour.
Cardboard telephone-pole poster / advertising window card for the biggest rock band in the world back when they were just starting out. "KROQ & Wolf & Rissmiller Present U2, May 13, Santa Monica Civic. Island Records & Tapes."

U2 worked hard on their way to superstardom, and nothing exemplifies this like their incessant touring when they first gained some traction with their debut LP, Boy. It took until mid-March 1981 for the album to enter Billboard's Top LPs chart, where it only peaked at #63.

But its leadoff track, and their most recent single at this concert, was "I Will Follow," an incendiary track and a U2 concert favorite to this very day. And on this particular night, the band actually played it twice. (I should know; I was at this concert, and I took notes. Pretty cool, huh? But no, this is not my poster. --Pete)

No opening act is mentioned on this hot-pink window card, but opening for U2 was the post-punk Long Beach group the Suburban Lawns. (Romeo Void was originally scheduled to be the third act, but canceled.) The Lawns and lead singer Su Tissue got the best crowd reaction for "Oh My Genitals" and their 1979 debut single "Gidget Goes to Hell."

Back to the poster. KROQ was the leading alternative rock station in Los Angeles and perhaps even the entire country. Wolf & Rissmiller was a leading Southern California concert promoter. Santa Monica is simply a main beach area of Los Angeles, and the Civic an important concert hall for decades that held about 3,000 people. Island Records has been U2's record label every minute of their 40-year career. And tapes are something people used to actually buy.

Made by the Colby Poster Printing Co. of Los Angeles, credited down in the bottom white margin. Measures the standard 14" x 22". In Very Good Plus condition with minimal wear on the upper left corner, some surface scuffing & scratches resulting in minor paint loss in the "2" of U2, and "$30.00" written in pen on the verso. But it's gonna cost you more than that this time around. COA from Heritage Auctions.
