Description

Two Gospel Music Jumbo Cardboard Concert Posters. A pair of large advertising window cards for gospel-music concerts 14 years apart.

The earlier example, from July 16, 1959 at a high school in Chattanooga, TN, features the Nightingales and Davis Sisters of Philadelphia, the Hightower Brothers of Newark, N.J., the Brooklyn All-Stars of that city in New York, and the C.B.S. Trumpeteers of Baltimore, MD. All acts get a photograph, and in fact there are 26 singers smiling out at you. Poster features very effective split-fountain coloring which takes orange into yellow into blue into pink.

The later poster, also with split-fountain printing taking pastel pink into yellow in light blue, dates from Sunday, April 22, 1973. The seven-act affair took place at the King Solomon Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan. Six of the acts are pictured, with perhaps only the local group left out, but the photos aren't captioned so you had to know your gospel music back then to identify the pictures.

The Chattanooga poster measures 22" x 28 1/4" and grades to Very Good condition for dark toning in the upper two corners and margin areas, and the tips of both bottom corners missing.

The Detroit poster measures 22" x 28" and grades to Very Good Plus condition mainly for eight sets of tack holes throughout the poster, some dirt & grime on the poster and a couple of harmless surface creases. COA from Heritage Auctions.
