Thelonious Monk & Sonny Rollins 1954 Open Door, New York Small Concert Poster. A vintage miniature poster, made of card stock, for jazz genius Thelonious Monk and tenor saxophone great Sonny Rollins playing at New York City's Open Door nightclub on Sunday evening, the Fourth of July, 1954. "The Greatest in Modern Jazz," it proclaims at the top, and it wasn't exaggerating.

There's no question this is an unusual configuration, being so small but yet laid out exactly like a poster and made of card stock. This can't be called a handbill, it's definitely just a very small poster. (It also leaves a letter out of Monk's first name.)

Bob Reisner presented the show and owned the nightclub. This item, and a couple others in this auction, actually came from Mr. Reisner's estate years after he passed away in the early 70's. And it was via the old-fashioned way... his heirs simply cleaned out his files and took them to an established flea market in New York City, where the first few lucky patrons to stumble across them took home some real treasures, including original vinyl pressings and a few posters like this.

Measures 6 1/2" x 10" and grades to Very Good Plus condition. One pinhole top center; very slight creases in two bottom corner areas, barely visible; just a touch of surface markings above "Reisner" and above the "S" in "Rollins"; an almost indistinguishable edge crease to the right of "And"; even toning throughout; and "1954" written in pen after the date. COA from Heritage Auctions.
