The Rolling Stones UK Debut Album Decca Promotional Poster (1964)....
Description
The Rolling Stones UK Debut Album Decca Promotional Poster (1964). Vintage and exceedingly rare Decca promotional poster for the Rolling Stones' self-titled debut album (LK 4605). Measuring 23.75" x 6", the poster features a black background with headshots of the band, captioned in bold yellow and white text "First Great Chart-Busting LP on Sale Here." This poster is such a rarity that Heritage has only sold one other example of this UK poster in 2018, selling for over $9,000. On December 7, 1963, With the Beatles (their second LP) hit number one on the UK charts. It remained there for 21 consecutive weeks, fending off competition from rising Merseybeat acts like The Hollies, Gerry and the Pacemakers, and The Searchers, as well as enduring chart staples such as the South Pacific and Sound of Music soundtracks, which had remarkable longevity. The Beatles' dominance seemed unshakable until The Rolling Stones released their debut LP on April 17, 1964. After entering the chart at number seven, the Stones dethroned the Beatles during the week of April 25 and held the top spot for 12 straight weeks, until A Hard Day's Night reclaimed the number one position, thereby igniting one of the most storied rivalries in pop music history. Though modest when compared to the band's later creative triumphs, the Stones' debut was an electric introduction, largely made up of covers of blues and R&B pioneers like Chuck Berry, Jimmy Reed, and Rufus Thomas. At the time, their raw blend of R&B and rock 'n' roll felt thrillingly new. Tracks like "I Just Want to Make Love to You," "Carol," and "Route 66" became live staples, while the record's only song credited to Jagger/Richards, "Tell Me (You're Coming Back)," hinted at the songwriting brilliance that would soon emerge. Exhibits fold lines as issued by Decca in 1964, with only very light marks visible to the paper and edges.
