Description

The Great Society w/Grace Slick 1965-66 Matrix Club, San Francisco Small Poster. An original advertising poster, made on a low budget, for the Great! Society playing at San Francisco's Matrix nightclub in general, rather than giving specific dates. A lot of collectors might be drawn toward this piece's utter simplicity, underscoring the naivety of the folk-rock scene that was slowly developing in the Bay Area at the time.

If this didn't come with such great provenance nobody would trust it, so it's key that it came from Ray Andersen, the one-time manager of the place. You can't ascertain if it's from '65 or '66, but that hardly matters... it's definitely no later than October '66, when the Great Society disbanded after Grace jumped to the Airplane.

Measures 8 1/2" x 14" and grades to Near Mint Minus condition. From the Ray Andersen Collection. Letter of Provenance from Sunny Andersen Chanel, COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Poster was once folded in half, but it's a benign crease running through the upper two points of the star and breaking no color. The upper right corner has a ½" diagonal crease. The upper left corner has an almost invisible one of 1 ½". General light toning throughout.
