Description

The Grateful Dead 1978 London, England / Cairo, Egypt Concert Poster Graded 9.8. An original first-printing Grateful Dead concert poster covering two cities and featuring astounding artwork by the late Alton Kelley. On the left, the poster advertises the Dead at the Rainbow Theater in London on September 19, 1978, which was subsequently canceled. On the right, after "Egypt 1978" all the information is given in Arabic. The Egyptian shows were held on September 14-16.

Easily one of the most popular Grateful Dead concert posters ever designed, a true perennial favorite that looks beyond gorgeous when framed. Measures 20" x 30" and was graded a pyramid-high 9.8 Near Mint/Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: It's obviously Egypt which carries the day here. After "Egypt 1978" in English, the rest is in Arabic. The Dead played three shows at the Sound and Light Theatre at the Great Pyramid at Giza in Cairo, Egypt on September 14, 15 and 16. It's interesting that Kelley used the headline "European Tour 1978," because there were no other shows across the Atlantic but these. The Egyptian shows were sandwiched by a September 2 concert in East Rutherford, New Jersey beforehand, and a Winterland, San Francisco stand from October 17-22 afterwards. That was it. (Plus the canceled London show; so we guess two cities could constitute a "tour.")
