Description

THE SAME WEEK "LIGHT MY FIRE" HIT #1 NATIONALLY

The Doors 1967 Seattle, WA Eagles Auditorium Silkscreened Concert Poster. An original advertising poster for the Doors appearing at the famed Eagles Auditorium in Seattle, Washington on Sunday and Monday nights, July 23 & 24, 1967. This silkscreened gem is comprised of Day-Glo fluorescent inks printed on black cardboard, and could not have possibly been a big or even medium production run.

This is the kind of terrifically fun, homespun psychedelic art which makes the hobby so interesting. Although the Doors were signed to a major label (Elektra), there's not a whiff of corporate influence anywhere to be found here. The poster artist – credited just as "Gebaroff Sign" - listed the time of the shows as "Ate P.M. Til Two A.M." And at the bottom of the artwork it states, "Produced Somehow by the Choicest Blend." Talk about sneaking one by the suits!

And then there were the concerts. According to Greg Shaw's book The Doors on the Road (Omnibus Press, 1997), "The Doors' first shows at Eagles are extraordinarily intense, praised at the time as being two of the most dramatic and vividly cathartic rock performances to have ever hit Seattle." And reviewer Tom Robbins wrote in Seattle's Helix magazine, "The intensity begins the moment they stalk on stage and it doesn't let up until the purge is over, the catharsis is complete. The Doors are carnivores in a land of musical vegetarians. Their craftsmanship is all the more astonishing in light of their savagery." Wow.

This first-ever Heritage offering measures 14" x 22" and grades to Very Good condition. From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Poster has a 3" diagonal, curving crease in the upper right corner which does not break the color. Lower right corner has a 1 ¾" diagonal corner crease which does break the color from top to bottom. There are a couple of other instances of surface creases such as in the largest black areas on either side of the Doors "cone." There is one tiny pinhole – and we mean tiny – top center, right on the cusp of the artwork but still in the black. The left margin has two of them, so probably staple holes, in the black just about halfway down the poster. Verso has a bit of white staining in the middle area.
