Description

The Beach Boys / Jackie DeShannon 1963 "Show of Stars" Honolulu Concert Poster. An original cardboard window card advertising four hitmakers in concert in Honolulu, Hawaii over a late spring weekend in 1963. Consists of block printing in blue ink on a pink background.

The Beach Boys are advertised as one word here, a holdover from 1962 when they were often billed that way (mistakenly, we assume). It's a little bit blasphemous here because they weren't rookies anymore: Their "Surfin' U.S.A." single had been in the nation's Top 10 for the last few weeks, peaking at #3. That had followed their previous Top 20 hit "Surfin' Safari."

Everyone here on the bill was actually in Hawaii for a nine-day tour of the Islands, and it was the first trip over for the Beach Boys. They played 16 shows over nine days, mostly for servicemen stationed in Hawaii. The Beach Boys served as backing band for Dee Dee Sharp and Jackie DeShannon. The Treniers, veterans that they were, had their own thing set up.

Dee Dee Sharp was headlining because she was white hot, having racked up five consecutive Top 10 pop hits over just the last 15 months: "Slow Twistin'" with Chubby Checker, "Mashed Potato Time," "Gravy (For My Mashed Potatoes)," "Ride!" and "Do the Bird."

The Treniers were not so much a singles artist, but had tons of rock 'n' roll street cred from their appearances in the movies Don't Knock the Rock and The Girl Can't Help It.

Jackie DeShannon was green as she could be, with no hits yet. But she was an up-and-comer, and did fine for herself by appearing as an opening act on The Beatles' first American tour the following year.

Measures just a little under 14" x 20" and grades to Very Good Minus condition. Water damage has washed away the pink in the upper-right area of the board; there's prominent black scuffing to the right of the musicians; there's tape-lifting over a couple of the prices, bottom center; and three corners are mildly creased and the lower left quite creased. The verso has tape lifts in three areas, some blue ink residue and that water stain in upper left. Good to note, however, that the poster's blue printing on the front remains strong, unfaded and basically perfect all the way down to that aforementioned tape lift in the ticket info.
