BREATHTAKING DAY-GLO COLORS ON THIS BEAUTY
The Beach Boys 1964 New Year's Eve Charlotte, NC Jumbo Globe
Concert Poster. Special note: Heritage mourns the passing of
group leader Brian Wilson on June 11. It's nice to see Brian at the
top center of the photograph which adorns this poster. An original vintage window card advertising The Beach Boys playing a concert in Charlotte, North Carolina on the night of December 31, 1964. This poster was constructed by the famous Globe Poster company on cardboard, and features bright, Day-Glo orange ink on top of equally florescent blue ocean waves. The eye appeal of this poster is off the charts, by far the best-looking Beach Boys concert poster ever made, by a country mile. Six song titles and a fun photo of the band in their trademark striped shirts complete the picture.
This poster design was a 'tour blank' with the city and date printed into the white box at the top, so it exists from more than just this one date. But these Globes were expensive for local promoters to invest in, so far from being made for every stop on this tour, only a few promoters seemed to have bothered with them. They primarily turn up from the southeastern part of the U.S. and almost always from 1965, so it's amazing to see this one appear from late '64, when their current Top 10 hit was "Dance, Dance, Dance" (plugged on the poster).
Funny to see a couple of Christmas songs listed on there too, and perhaps best of all, one of their true classic records, "I Get Around" - their biggest hit single ever. For this writer, that song "makes" this poster.
All in all, it's a stunning and highly-sought-after concert poster from arguably the most popular, important and enduring rock band in American history. Measures 22" x 28 1/4" and grades to Near Mint Minus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: It should be pointed out that even the most modern photographic techniques come up short in portraying Day-Glo colors. When seen in-person, Day-Glo inks are packed with a ‘wow' factor which just can't be fully captured by a camera.
Like all vintage advertising pieces, once the concerts were over, 99% of these things were thrown away. Or saved for just a couple or few years. So if you combine that with the fact that few cities used them, these jumbo Beach Boys Globes don't often change hands. There's only a few, at best, known amongst collectors, and only from a couple of cities. Heritage has only ever had it twice, and both times from the summer of '65.
Condition details: Chameleon Restoration addressed a few edge and corner issues, touching up any printing or color where necessary, mending pinholes, eradicating surface blemishes and greatly reducing any creasing it might have had. The result is a fantastically satisfying piece with little or no evidence of past damage.
