Description
The Allman Brothers Band 1971 Hampton, VA Concert Poster. An original concert poster for The Allman Brothers Band, starring Gregg Allman, Dickie Betts and bassist Berry Oakley, playing a show in Hampton, Virginia at the Hampton Road Coliseum on Sunday, December 12, 1971.Sadly, this was just six weeks after guitarist Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident. The band had quickly shot a new publicity photo without him to move forward. However, the original photo with Duane was still used for this poster, while other venues on this tour updated the photo. Mr. Oakley was still with the group and in the picture, although he, too, would pass away the following year. So this found the group in-between two tragedies.
The timing for this tour (and show) could hardly be better in the broader scheme of things. Who wouldn't want to see the ABB on their tour promoting the legendary At Fillmore East live album, widely regarded as one of the best live albums of all time? It had been recorded that spring (with Duane) and released that summer, and was unquestionably the record that put them on the map. Mobile, Alabama's Wet Willie, also on Capricorn Records, was the opening act.
This was still three years before Goldmine magazine was born, and the rock-collecting community was hardly going yet, so people didn't save things like this. Their attention was still on posters that had colorful psychedelic artwork like Bill Graham's posters.
Printed on thick white semi-glossy cardstock, this poster measures 13" x 24 ½" and grades to Very Good condition with spots of light-brown foxing throughout, most prominently to the left of "Band" and above "Nachman's," but also in a few other places, especially along the top edge.
