    Description

Temptations 1969 Chicago Concert Poster During Their Most Successful Year. An original vintage cardboard window card for the most successful group in the history of Motown Records, the Temptations. This green giant sold tickets for a weekend of shows at the Capitol Theatre in Chicago, IL on May 16-18, 1969.

"The Tempting Temptations," as they were sometimes nicknamed, were simply having the biggest year of their career, according to the Billboard magazine chart books. How was this for a start: They entered the year with two of the top six pop singles in the country... "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" with Diana Ross & the Supremes at #3, and "Cloud Nine" at #6. That would make anybody's year right there.

But they followed that right up with the Top 10 pop hit "Runaway Child, Running Wild," which had just dropped off the charts at the time of these shows. (It had gone #1 R&B, btw.) Two more Top 10 R&B hits followed, "I'll Try Something New" and "Don't Let the Joneses Get You Down." Then by summer it was time for the biggest pop hit of their career: "I Can't Get Next to You," #1 in Billboard for two weeks. Yes... we would say they were on fire.

A very scarce piece printed by the "Globe Poster Corp., Chicago" and making its first-ever appearance in a Heritage auction. Measures 22" x 28" and grades to Mint Minus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Most of the imperfections on here are, we believe, attributable to the original printing job. Exceptions would be a bump in the upper right corner, a ding on the board's edge to the left of "Gordy," and a surface crease on the far right Temptations' face. Of course, those could've happened at the printer, too. What did seem to occur during printing, so not considered ‘damage,' are small black smudges found here & there, such as around the "C" in "Capitol" at the top, the streaks in the upper left of the group's picture, hairline smearing in the last four letters of the group's name, and a little bit around "25 S. State." Also light white flecks scattered throughout the deep green background, and conversely, some green ink up in the white margin above "CA." These are all typical of a print shop hustling out many poster jobs each day, assuming everything they created would live for about six weeks and then be discarded right after the event.
