Description
THE BIGGEST SHOW OF STARS MEETS THE MOTORTOWN REVUE!
Stevie Wonder, 4 Tops, Temptations 1965 Biggest Show of Stars
Jumbo Globe Concert Poster. A stunningly rich and rare
oversized jumbo window card advertising a bevy of Motown Records
stars appearing on tour in Columbus, Ohio for two shows on Saturday
night, October 23, 1965. This was the classic "Super Enterprises
Inc. Presents the Biggest Show of Stars" series that is so popular
with collectors, but nobody has this poster because it's the only
one known to exist among collectors - from any city. (We previously
had said "one of just two," but that was an error... nobody's ever
seen another one.)This magnificent board, naturally done by Globe, is a colorful cornucopia of 10 hit-making artists, important song titles, fun photos and Day-Glo inks. The glittering talent line-up included The 4 Tops, The Temptations, Martha and the Vandellas, 15-year-old Stevie Wonder, Junior Walker & the All-Stars, The Marvelettes, and The Spinners before they moved on to Atlantic Records and great success in the 70's.
These musicians had a combined total of over one hundred Top 20 pop hits in Billboard during their careers. That's mainstream pop, not R&B, where the number would be even larger. Stevie Wonder leads the pack with 36, Kim Weston had one, and everyone else falls in between.
This is a poster for the ages, no question about it, and it's no exaggeration to say that if you don't win this one, it could easily be 10 years or more before another one might eventually surface. Motortown Revue posters always sell in the $20,000-$50,000 range, and this one will be no exception. Measures 22" x 30 1/2" and grades to repaired Very Good condition. From the Jim Cook Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: Kim Weston had a memorable duet hit with Marvin Gaye in 1967 with "It Takes Two," a real evergreen. Also appearing on the poster are novelty act Willie Tyler & Lester and Choker Campbell "and his Big 13-piece Motown Sound Band."
Condition details: Has the typical rounded, dinged and creased corners. The photo of the Spinners in the lower left corner has several remnants of cello tape – not the tape itself – which is noticeable only when the board is tilted at an angle to the light (most of the faces are, thankfully, missed). There is a small ding to the top edge above the letter "V." A lot of white surface area, in the venue box and down the margins, has been artfully smoothed over and cleared of marks by a professional restorer. There is some resulting extremely light-blue staining around the date and ticket prices. At the very bottom, "Globe Posters – Baltimore" got dinged up a bit and possibly has some restored letters. General overall toning throughout. On the verso, there is much in the way of unaddressed tape lifting, staining, glue residue, original posting tape and pencil writing, all of which we think adds to the board's authenticity and patina. We're glad it was left alone.
