    Description

Stevie Ray Vaughan / Blackbird 1972 Amazingly Early Austin, TX Silkscreened Concert Poster. A rare cardboard concert poster for guitar god Stevie Ray Vaughan's very first band, Blackbird, at the Waterloo Social Club in Texas' state capitol of Austin in the spring of 1972. Opening acts were Ninth Street, Phoenix and "many more." The Sunday afternoon, evening and night affair was scheduled to run nine hours, from 3:00 PM to midnight, and admission was just two dollars.

This 49-year-old advertising window card features beautiful red, yellow, white & black artwork silkscreened onto the board. Blackbird concert posters are few and far between, and highly coveted by collectors. There were many more posters made for the Cobras, another 1970's SRV band, than there were for Blackbird, the band Stevie formed when he was still in high school.

It's been well-documented that only 100 silkscreened prints were made for each of artist Robert Burns' popular Blackbird posters, and they seldom come up for sale half-a-century later. Rock-music collecting had not gained much traction yet in 1972 - Goldmine magazine was still two years away - so the posters were seemingly only saved for their artwork appeal, by those in Austin and surrounds.

Measures approximately 14" x 22" and grades to Near Mint Minus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Robert A. Burns - whose last-name signature is printed as part of the artwork by the penguin's left foot – was schooled at the University of Texas. He went on to become an art director and production designer in the movie business. His work is well-known in the horror genre, including motion pictures such as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Re-Animator and The Howling. (Burns passed away in 2004.)

Condition details: The artwork is almost flawless, save for a small dark curving line touching the "S" and "D" of "Presents Blackbird" at the top. The two bottom corners are dinged leaving half-inch creases, and the top two areas have the tiniest amount of "edge pushing" which really makes no difference. Also one ding to the top edge above the "PR" in "Presents." Beautiful, unused condition.
