Rockabilly/Rock & Roll 1957 Boxing-Style Concert Poster.An original vintage window card from Youngstown, OH on Friday, March 15, 1957, featuring several stars of the new rockabilly and rock & roll sensations sweeping the nation. "Rock and Roll" are the biggest letters on the poster, aimed directly at teenagers, and most of the eight musicians listed had the hits to back it up.
Sonny James tops the bill with "Young Love," his crossover smash that went #1 pop, #1 country and #3 R&B in early 1957. Right below him is Carl Perkins, with "Blue Suede Shoes" given as his classic song title. The next line knocks you for a loop with Gene Vincent and his "Be Bop a Lula," sitting next to Sanford Clark with "The Fool." All three were Top 10 rock hits from the year before.
And the last line of musicians is rockabilly heaven. "Rock 'n' Roll Ruby" was the very first Sun Records single for Warren Smith. (Its songwriter is credited as Johnny Cash, but Smith claims that George Jones actually wrote it.) Bill Allen and the Keynotes are in the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. And some people will love the last-named artist, Johnny Burnette, more than anyone else on this window card. He was a founding member of the seminal and influential Rock and Roll Trio (along with his brother Dorsey). Their cover of "The Train Kept A Rollin'" with its distorted guitar was a huge influence on countless rock guitarists including Jimmy Page, both in the Yardbirds and with his new late-60's group Led Zeppelin. As a result, Zeppelin opened all their shows with the song on their first tours of America, and later Aerosmith adopted it as an important part of their repertoire as well.
And one more wow factor: among the "7 Other Stars" on this tour not given love on the poster were none other than Eddie Cochran and Roy Orbison, neither of whom had had any chart success yet. Wow!
All of this music for $1.50, $2.00 and $2.50, the poster tells us. It features a printer's union stamp between the words "Rock" and "Roll," not an uncommon site on old posters. Measures 14" x 22" and graded Very Good with one nick in the upper left margin and a bend in the upper right, but mostly for strong quarter-fold creases that leave the poster a little bit flimsy. It still stands up on its own when it's leaned against something. And all the classic music certainly stands on its own. COA from Heritage Auctions.
