R.E.M. 1981 Tyrone's O.C. Athens, GA Concert Handbill. A handbill for numerous dates at Tyrone's O.C. in Athens, featuring a Thursday, June 4 show featuring hometown favorites, R.E.M. (Other shows mentioned are for Love Tractor, the Side Effects, and the incredible British punk-funk act, Gang of Four. Gang of Four had recently released their outstanding second album, Solid Gold.)

Not much information is known about this show in particular, but the four-piece played two sets. During the first set, they covered the Velvet Underground's "There She Goes Again." As valued as the Velvets are, their record sales at the time said otherwise. As Brian Eno accurately once said, everyone who bought a Velvet Underground record started a band.

R.E.M. would regularly play Tyrone's until it sadly burned down in January of the following year. R.E.M. was scheduled to play the night the bar burned down. But for this show in 1981, they were finalizing mixes on their first single, "Radio Free Europe." That would be released by Hib-Tone and serve as their first proper release.

Measures 9 ½" x 14". In Very Good Plus condition with staple holes, light soiling in a few spots, and toning around the edges. COA from Heritage Auctions.
