Description

Ray Charles 1966 Richmond, Virginia Jumbo Globe Concert Poster. An original and seldom-seen jumbo advertising window card for the legendary Ray Charles appearing at the Mosque in Richmond, VA, a venue that saw as many great R&B and R&R shows as any hall in the country. This particular 'tour blank' was new to us and everyone we showed it to, so it couldn't have been used by Brother Ray for long. Globe Posters' strong orange Day-Glo inks really accentuate this one. Sunday, July 24, 1966, two evening performances and ticket prices spanning only two to three dollars. Not bad for "the world's most exciting musical personality!" Measures 22" x 28 5/8" and grades to Very Good Minus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Ray was still in peak form in 1966. His current single "Let's Go Get Stoned" was #1 on the R&B charts this summer, and also a Top 40 pop hit. Joe Cocker famously covered it a few years later. Ray's previous two singles earlier in '66 were covers of Buck Owens' "Crying Time" and "Together Again," both of which reached #1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart. Based on all that, Ray was also touring behind his Top 20 album Crying Time.

Condition details: Board is very toned throughout. Right margin has a half-inch-long piece of the material missing, leading into a four-inch crease going up the black and breaking a little color. Bigger-style nail holes in all four corners, with the upper right one falling in the blue "4." There's also an extra small pinhole in the upper right, just off the edge. Upper left corner has a 1 ½" diagonal corner crease. There's a 1 ½" horizontal surface scrape that goes over the orange "and," plus a ¾" vertical one that goes from the "S" in "Musical" up to the "X", both breaking color along the way. Not considered damage should be the small Day-Glo orange smudge on the "E" in "Mosque" at the top, surely done at the printers.

Poster's verso is in tough shape, but most collectors don't care about the back on boxing-style posters. Two big patches where glue was once used to post this window card, but they're smooth to the touch. Interestingly, there are nine other small marks of that same-colored glue/adhesive – three at the top, three in the middle and three at the bottom – which are rough to the touch. Maybe a little bit of stickiness, too. Then there are several other instances of some white or light-cream material feeling very 3D to the fingertips, so it's some kind of residue from when the poster was once posted somewhere.
