DescriptionPatti Smith 1975 New Haven, CT Concert Poster. A small poster on white paper for a Patti Smith show in New Haven a handful of months before her game-changing debut LP, Horses, was released. Billed as "Rock N' Roll Poetry," Smith was a different kind of force in the burgeoning New York City punk scene.
This was a time when Smith was becoming more than a poet performing with a band. Backed by a fantastic band (including guitarist Lenny Kaye and drummer Jay Dee Daugherty), Smith was a force. She would boldly proclaim "Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine" on the opening lines of Horses' first track, a revamped version of the Van Morrison-penned tune, "Gloria." The poetry of her words matched with her vulnerable voice was an immense inspiration to young, aspiring musicians. (Michael Stipe of R.E.M. was one of them.)
Held at the ACES Educational Center for the Arts magnet school, entrance to this show was only two dollars.
Measures 8 1/2" x 14" and grades to Very Good Plus condition. The only issue is a horizontal fold halfway down, but which doesn't break the black ink. It runs through the first "R" of "Rock," across her chest but above the word "Performance," and through the lettering on the right. There's also a teeny-tiny corner crease on the lower left, not coming near the black lines. COA from Heritage Auctions.
