Parliament-Funkadelic Precursor Concert Poster, Detroit (1969).
An oversized window poster printed on cardboard for "The Big Show of '69," which took place at Cobo Arena in Detroit. Highlighted by the presence of the Parliaments ("Good Old Funky Music"), which had a young George Clinton on center stage, and the Funkadelics, with the song "I'll Bet You" listed under their name. Clinton would later merge the groups into the legendary Parliament-Funkadelic.

Also high on the bill are The Originals, whose "Baby I'm For Real" was #1 R&B for a month in the fall of '69; Carolyn Franklin, younger sister of Aretha; the Detroit Emeralds, who had four Top 10 R&B hits in the early '70s; and Dennis Coffey, who had one. The design highlight of this poster, other than the dazzling Day-Glo florescent pink & yellow inks that Globe was famous for using, is the great collage of all the performers which really captures your attention - even the German Shepherd in the lower left.

This is not a complete poster, however; the very top portion has been trimmed off, which gave the show's date, venue and ticket information. This is a common occurrence with old cardboard concert posters, and while it's not desirable, it still leaves a very cool and frameable artifact, which in this case still mentions Detroit's Cobo Arena at the bottom.

This poster was printed using Day-Glo florescent inks, which really stand out in broad daylight. And then those inks take on a whole new appearance under a blacklight, those purple tube-lights that became all the rage in head shops and hippie pads in the late Sixties. Check out the additional photo of this poster under a blacklight, it adds quite a wow factor. It's remarkable how the pink turns to orange, and the yellow transforms into green!

Measures 22" x 27". In Very Good Minus condition due to the cut-off, a 1/2" x 1/4" hole by Carolyn Franklin's name, and some creasing and soiling throughout. COA from Heritage Auctions.
