Description
Otis Redding Tribute Show 1968 Jumbo Globe Day-Glo Concert Poster An original concert-advertising window card for a tribute show to the late, great Otis Redding, who had died about six weeks earlier, at Wichita University on Saturday, February 3, 1968. Mr. Redding had tragically perished in a plane crash on December 10, and this show (and probably tour) was obviously an effort by fellow musicians to honor his memory and work through their grief by singing.Otis' huge posthumous hit, "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" was just entering the charts at the time of this show. It made him a household name all by itself. The bill was topped by Arthur Conley, whose two previous Top 20 R&B hits had been produced by Mr. Redding, so he was certainly the appropriate headliner.
Poster measures 22 x 33 1/4", and grades to Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: Arthur Conley's "Sweet Soul Music" is an evergreen which hit #2 on both the pop and R&B charts. The songs given on the window card, "Shake, Rattle & Roll" and "Whole Lotta Woman," were his two follow-up singles in 1967. "Shake" is the other Top 20 hit that Otis produced.
The Fantastic Four follow with "You Gave Me Something," a Top 20 R&B hit from the previous summer.
Everyone knows "Knock on Wood" by Eddie Floyd, another evergreen that hit #1 in the summer of '66. The poster also gives "On a Saturday Night," his latest Stax single at the time of this event.
Further down the poster, the hits don't shine as brightly; the Precisions' "If This Is Love" was a Top 40 R&B hit in '67. Linda Jones, on the other hand, had a lot of firepower in '67; her "What I've Done (To Make You Mad)" was Top 10 R&B the previous year, and its predecessor, "Hypnotized," even went Top 5. (We show no trace of the Emeralds or the Sinceres.)
The Day-Glo inks used by Globe Posters in the 60's really come to life on this poster, already looking great in normal light and then taking on new life under a purple-tube blacklight. Check out our additional photo to see how all the clouds & boxes of color fairly explode under a blacklight. Crazy the way the orange stays orange, but the yellow turns to green!
Condition details: Front of the poster is very clean and presentable, hampered only by a big, significant fold across the center, but it nicely falls between Conley's song titles and "The Fantastic Four" and doesn't break any color. Poster also has a couple of tack & staple holes but they mostly don't show through, including the "T" in "University." Also has creases in three out of four corners, plus a couple of other random places on the large poster front. Red & yellow Day-Glo colors remain strong and true.
