Music at Newport 1961 Poster. Included is a rare 18" x 24" promo poster from the 1961 Music at Newport fest (not to be confused with the Newport Jazz Festival, the 1961 edition of which had been cancelled after a riot at the 1960 fest brought out the National Guard) that featured headliner Judy Garland, Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane, Count Basie, Cannonball Adderley, Gerry Mulligan, Sarah Vaughan, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck (who delighted the crowd with an impromptu performance of "Pennies From Heaven" during a rain storm), and countless others. It was a triumphant performance for Garland, who had never performed outdoors during the daytime ("It was like a giant living room with the windows open," she later remarked). It was her first appearance at the festival, and the singer and actress drew an audience of 6,000 people. The poster is in Fine condition with some mild water damage to the left edge.
