Description
Miriam Makeba 1968 Regal Theatre, Chicago Jumbo Concert Poster. An original cardboard advertising window card for singer/songwriter and civil-rights activist Miriam Makeba appearing at Chicago's famed Regal Theatre on Saturday, August 10, 1968, for two shows. The event was billed as "Afro-American Nite" and also included "Soul Bro" jazz organist Jack McDuff, Carl Wright and other stars. The poster closes with the phrase "Black Is Beautiful," a cultural phrase that came into everyday use in America in the 1960's.Makeba is known to many for having a Top 20 pop hit the previous fall with "Pata Pata" on Reprise Records. The words mean "Touch Touch" in a South African dialect, where Makeba hailed from, and is considered her signature song.
Printed by the Globe Poster Corp. in Chicago (not the Baltimore company) and measures 22" x 28" and grades to beautiful Near Mint Minus condition, with only slight corner bumps and creases to the top two corners, and some dirt smudging at bottom center over "Shop" and "Burning Spear."
