Miles Davis / Thelonious Monk / Ruth Brown 1959 Apollo Theater Concert Handbill.
A double-sided paper flyer advertising two weeks' worth of shows at the world-famous Apollo Theater in Harlem, Manhattan, New York in winter 1959.

The big side here is the Jazz side, the big photo was saved for Ruth Brown, but the big story here is that this is a Miles Davis concert handbill which fell directly in between the two recording sessions for Kind of Blue, Miles' jazz masterpiece which is the biggest-selling jazz album of all time. That album was recorded on March 2 and April 22, 1959, and the dates advertised here were for the week starting March 13. And the two locations were certainly close enough: Columbia's recording studio was on 30th Street between 2nd & 3rd Avenues, and the famed Apollo was up on 125th near 8th Ave., a bus ride away. Kind of Blue would be released that summer, become everyone's favorite jazz album and go on to sell over four million copies in America alone, massive numbers for a jazz platter.

And thankfully, the handbill carries a great photo of Miles, too, a 50's posed publicity photo holding his golden trumpet. We are so lucky to have that picture on there; Thelonious Monk didn't get that honor. And dig the slug line under Davis' name: "Winner of all the jazz polls." And you've gotta love the way this flyer's designers put "JAZZ" in such huge letters, and the slogan above Miles' picture: "The Apollo is fast becoming 'THE' jazz spot in New York." The whole thing just elicits jazz excitement!

And R&B legend Ruth Brown, so easy on the eyes, is a great presence on here as she segued from being the Queen of R&B into a longer-lasting career of jazz and pop (and acting). Have we mentioned all the fun little stars and musical notes sprinkled about?

Let's not slight the "Way Out Genius of 88's," the legendary Thelonious Monk. Monk was tickling the ivories for Riverside Records at this point, on his way to becoming the second-most covered jazz composer in history (right after Duke Ellington). Johnny Richards and his band rounds out the bill.

On the flip side of this handbill, it's "Rock and Roll - Every Act a Winner." Headliner Lloyd Price was absolutely on fire at this point, seven years after first breaking through with "Lawdy Miss Clawdy." Hold your breath while we recount that 1959 saw Price place SIX songs in the Top 10 of Billboard's R&B singles chart. For this March engagement, Price was in between his smashes "Stagger Lee" and "Personality" - both evergreens that were #1 for a full month apiece (and huge pop hits, too). His next single that summer was "I'm Gonna Get Married," which was #1 for 'only' three weeks.

Then you have the Crests and the Chantels, both owners of recent Top 5 R&B hits. Five more acts round out the bill, almost all of them getting a photograph. Hey, at "Harlem's High Spot," remember, "Every Act's a Winner"!

This historic and very rare piece measures 8.5" x 11". In Very Good condition with overall toning, an extra toning spot in the upper right (jazz side) and upper left (rock side); and some light creasing in one of the lower areas. COA from Heritage Auctions.
