Louis Armstrong Concert Poster (Joe Glaser Presents,1937), Rare. Window card with orange and black printing on cardstock showing a fantastic head shot of a youthful "Satchmo" and announcing "Joe Glaser presents The Trumpet King of Swing In Person LOUIS ARMSTRONG and his Orchestra". The top of the window card features the date and venue information "Friday Aug. 6, Collinsville Park Ballroom, Collinsville, Illinois", with ticket prices "Advance Sale $1.00 per person at the Door $1.35 per person" and a list of ticket sellers in the area. The lower border printed with "Decca Records" logo to lower right corner and Armstrong's management "Rockwell O'Keefe, Inc. Rockefeller Center, Radio City, N.Y. / 8949 Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood, Calif. " Measures 14" x 22.25". In Very Good Condition, heavy horizontal crease across the center with 0.5" tear to left edge, another 0.5" partial tear to left border, neither tears affecting image, creasing to corners with 0.5" inch tear to lower right corner, some discoloration to card commensurate with age. This is one of the earliest and most sought after concert posters for arguably the greatest jazz musician of all time. It is interesting to note the wealth of information listed at the top of this poster, which is similar in style to earlier posters from the 1910s and 1920s. It lists no less than seventeen different locations where advance tickets were being sold for this performance. This is perhaps a reflection of Louis Armstrong's rising popularity and fame during the mid to late 1930s. In 1935 Joe Glaser became his manager and helped to resolve outstanding legal and financial problems. Soon after, he started recording with Decca Records and in 1936 appeared alongside Bing Crosby in the movie "Pennies From Heaven". The role was particularly significant as it was the first time that an African-American had shared top billing with a white actor in a major movie release. In 1937 Armstrong was also the first African-American to host a National, sponsored radio show, NBC's "Fleischmann's Yeast".
