Led Zeppelin 1969 Irvine, CA Psychedelic Handbill.
A nice oversized Led Zeppelin flyer from just their second American tour in the spring of 1969. The location was the University of California at Irvine in Southern California (known as 'U.C. Irvine'), and the date was Thursday, May 1, 1969. And the handbill's graphics... blue & brown kaleidoscopic psychedelia laid over their first Atlantic Records publicity photo. Fun, stylized lettering at the bottom conveyed the ticket prices and promoter's name. It's a dynamite combination that makes this very scarce piece one of the most sought-after early Zeppelin collectibles.

(Errata: Our printed catalog calls this a small poster, but it's the flyer we're auctioning; the poster measures 12x18".)

Early Led Zeppelin advertising materials usually relied on the Atlantic Records photograph, which was great in its own right. The usage of blimp and zeppelin images on their posters didn't really get going strong until 1970. But interestingly, the very first usage of a dirigible on Zep's posters and handbills that we could track was the very next night... at the Rose Palace in Pasadena, one hour away. (That handbill featured a long, thin, blimp-like ship that was never used again.) So that makes this Irvine piece the end of an era in Led Zeppelin advertising... from the next night onwards, blimps started popping up everywhere.

The show was opened by L.A. rocker Lee Michaels, who would enjoy his only big hit two years later ("Do You Know What I Mean").

A very charismatic piece, measuring a robust (for a handbill) 8" x 12". Printed on shiny glossy paper. Grades to Very Good with several surface creases, clearly visible when held at an angle to the light, but nearly invisible when viewed straight on. COA from Heritage Auctions.

The movie quite literally changed my life. I have included a pic of me in Sly's Rocky 3 Cashmere overcoat, would much appreciate if it is possible for you to forward this email to Sly to let him know the overcoat is in good hands, and will be well taken care of, (as will be the Rambo knife forging tools, the other lot I won!) Wish you very happy holidays and a great 2016!
