Description
Large Woodstock Advertising Poster from Collection of Promoter Michael Lang. An original, authentic, pre-show printing of the large Woodstock Festival advertising poster from the summer of 1969, owned by festival promoter Michael Lang for over 50 years and now consigned to Heritage for this auction."I saw it in the office right after the festival, and took it for a souvenir," Lang tells Heritage. "There was a pack of them lying around the office that hadn't gone out, and I took a few of them." His LOP that accompanies this sale backs up that account.
Needless to say, most people consider Woodstock to be the most important weekend in this history of rock, a pop-culture milestone practically unmatched in history, and possibly the end of the 1960's. The talent line-up was spellbinding and legendary, and terrifically, the musicians are named on the poster, including Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Who, Santana, Crosby Stills & Nash, Jefferson Airplane, Creedence Clearwater (Revival), Joan Baez, The Band, Joe Cocker and a host of others.
To get this poster from the man who actually created, organized and hosted Woodstock is outrageously fun provenance that is simply off the charts.
Measures 24" x 36" and grades to Very Good Plus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.
Literature: See Grushkin, Paul, The Art of Rock: Posters from Presley to Punk, Abbeville Press, New York, 1987, p.257 (illus.).
More Information: Some light crumpling along the poster's left edge near the top, plus another one halfway down, another 2/3 down, and another almost to the bottom, which may be the strongest. A small bump on the right edge. The top right margin has edge pushes which result in a little white showing. There's a line through the "E" in "Presents" and the "N" in "An." It goes down through the green all the way to the bottom. You really have to look hard to find it, primarily seen when the poster is tilted at an angle to the light.
