KISS Very Early, Pre-First-Album Concert Poster (1973).
A very important seminal concert poster for KISS, right in their backyard and before the band had a manager or record label. This poster covers a weekend (Labor Day, August 31-Sept. 2) at an 800-seat nightclub called Coventry in Long Island City, Queens. Its primitive design has special cache: It was hand-drawn by band member Paul Stanley. This was to be the band's last shows before going in to record KISS, which barely cracked the Top 100 on Billboard's album chart the next spring. Their opening act was Wild Honey.

Just the year before, Stanley and Gene Simmons had been in a band called Wicked Lester. In the fall of '72 Peter Criss joined on drums, and then in January '73 Ace Frehley came aboard to round out the band. On January 30, the boys first played this venue, named the Popcorn Club at the time, but soon renamed Coventry. Weeks later they decided to call themselves KISS.

Shortly after this weekend gig in late summer they hired their first manager, and on November 1 became the first act signed to Casablanca Records, which would become a legendary 1970's record label. Touring? KISS wouldn't start doing that for almost half-a-year after these shows.

This printed paper poster measures 13.4" x 17.4". In Very Good Plus condition with just a bit of handling wear and a horizontal crease through "Wild Honey," although it breaks no color and is all but invisible. Also some light toning at the top, and a group of tiny tears in the lower right margin. COA from Heritage Auctions.
