TRANE BLOWING FOR A DOZEN NIGHTS IN THE SECOND CITY

John Coltrane, Roland Kirk, Horace Silver 1962 Chicago, IL Jumbo Concert Poster. An original cardboard window card advertising live jazz music at McKie's nightclub in Chicago during July and August of 1962. The main attraction is certainly John Coltrane, who was scheduled for 12 nights beginning in mid-August. Coming before Trane were Horace Silver, Gene Ammons and Roland Kirk.

Trane had just released his Impulse! album Coltrane, which features drumming wizard Elvin Jones and pianist extraordinaire McCoy Tyner. Coltrane is a modal jazz effort that the Village Voice called both "gorgeous" and "shattering," in a good way. Roland Kirk was in the middle of recording his Domino album for Mercury Records, which would come out in November. And Horace Silver had just finished recording his album The Tokyo Blues for Blue Note when he arrived for this engagement. It, too, would be released in November.

This remains the only specimen of this poster we've ever encountered. We sold this exact poster in 2021 for $13,750; the owner has enjoyed it for three years and is now selling it. Measures 22" x 28" and grades to Near Mint Minus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Has light creasing and bumps around the corners, along with a few light spots of soiling/toning.
